The Street Performer

The street performer creates a style, a language and brings forward his vision through the street, the meeting places, the cities. He mediates this vision using the time of day, the position of the sun, the arrival of the night. Hides the horizon, comes out of windows, hangs on to cranes, transforms trains, dances with boats. He is the opposite of the sedentary city dweller, constantly on the move, always beyond expectations. He feeds his inspiration with different cultures constantly searching for new ideas. He is not a reactionary but still not where he would be expected.

Coming closer to Year 2000, we are travelling the world. We crossed the threshhold of 1998 with a parade through the center of Addis Ababa with 150 young performers of Circus Ethiopia. Transhumance will soon be in the boulevards of Weimar in Germany, on February 19 for the opening ceremonies of the European Cultural Capital 1999. Happy and thankful, we are, accumulating new experiences, encounters, and travels!

After a tour of France in Evry, Sotteville les Rouen, Chalon sur Saône, Brest, Noisy-le-Sec, "Transhumance, l'heure du troupeau" takes to the road again on September 5, 1998, in Cognac, France, for the sixth time at the " Coup de Chauffe" Festival. Then in Weimar, Germany, on February 19, 1999, the mechanical animals will cross the Boulevards. At the conclusion of this year, 580 people have marched with us on these epic crossings. A success which confirms more and more the dream of a final "Transhumance" with 1999 artists, musicians, and one soloist for the eve of the new millenium. A cosmopolitan event to oppose the fundamentalists, an entry point for the future!

Created four years ago from a misunderstanding between Décor Sonore and ourselves, this performance continues its travela through Europe. After Poland and Germany, Cinematophone travels to Belgium and then to the UK.

Those who thought a fixed abode would create a sclerosis for this street performing company should be surprised, Le Moulin has given us wings. An indispensable tool, we are the first to appreciate the difference: the stability has given us more time to create. The "Lieux de Fabrique" (creation bases) are necessary tools, more should be established, the authorities need to increase their support and their existence. Our relationship with our city, Noisy-le-Sec, and its citizens are excellent. Our ongoing work with our community is definitly the reason for the continuing success of Oposito. We have never travelled so much since we threw our anchor in Noisy-le-Sec.
