La Façade du Moulin Fondu, rue de Merlan

The establishment in 1996 of the Moulin Fondu is a landmark in the life of the Oposito Company. Those who thought a fixed abode would create a sclerosis for this street theatre company should be surprised: our productions have since been presented all over France, Europe and even in Ethiopia. We have never travelled so much since we threw our anchor in Noisy-le-Sec. Headquarters for our strategies and inventions, Le Moulin has given us wings, contributing to the establishment of Street Theatre as a major cultural element. Le Moulin has created a synergy benefiting Street Theatre in France and in Europe.

Milestones

La salle de répétitionFollowing an initiative by Oposito in cooperation with the Gerard Philipe Cultural Centre of Noisy-le-Sec, the establishment of a creation space was discussed with the Seine-Saint-Denis Regional Council. The Oposito request was presented in the context of a generalised growth of Street Theatre companies across France. Since 1991 Street Theatre professionals have proposed the creation of permanent structures to allow the creation of performances in appropriate settings. The term "Lieux de Fabrique" (creation spaces) was thus coined for the Street Performing Arts.

Following an understanding between many institutions (Ministère de la Culture et de la Francophonie, Conseil Général de Seine-Saint-Denis, Conseil Régional de l'Ile de France et Ville de Noisy-le-Sec) an old farm was renovated in the old part of Noisy-le-Sec. Le Moulin Fondu was inaugurated on January 7, 1996.

"We will never be an institution trying to establish a standard for the arts; we know the greatest risk is to fall into the charm of our comfortable abode. Do not worry! as long as the Moulin remains le Moulin, its doors will remain open to all winds; there will be enough movement and life to keep us standing and moving on..." (closing statement of Oposito at the inauguration of the Moulin Fondu on January 7, 1996).

"Le Moulin Fondu will be a place to reflect, to create, to innovate not only for Oposito but as well for many young street theatre companies who will be able to create and test their new creations in the Noisy-le-Sec Festival, "Rencontres d'ici et d'ailleurs". They will be able to work in the space created now more than ten years ago. Oposito are not teachers in the strict sense; they have chosen to share their knowledge and their experience by working together with these new companies" (Statement by the mayor of Noisy-le-Sec, Mr. Jean-Louis Mons, at the inauguration of Le Moulin Fondu on January 7, 1996).
